A Brief History

The idea for “WORDS WITHOUT VOICES®” crystallized for me one day in high school, in 1971. I had purchased the latest Jethro Tull release on vinyl. After opening the album (LP) jacket, I spied what would become the prototype for WWV—a pull-out liner-note sheet with Ian Anderson’s masterful words superimposed over a picture of his most famous lyrical creation: Aqualung.

Song Lyrics – a lost art?

The marriage of melody and message can be a powerful combination. When notes and words are joined, a hybrid form of communication results, and often this hybrid has greater impact than if either the words or the music were to be considered by themselves.

The single agent that binds John Lennon & Paul McCartney, Richard Rodgers & Oscar Hammerstein, Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller and Andrew Lloyd Webber & Tim Rice together and for all time is their mastery of the lyrical song hook.

Creative Philosophy

As a conceptual artist, I am interested in how visual artworks “frame” words and titles in the viewer’s mind.

I very much believe in the ideas of both synergy and symbiosis. I draw inspiration from artwork and music, and I believe that visual artists and musicians can draw inspiration from my lyrics and titles.
